Usui Reiki Ryoho was a respected scholar and teacher of spirituality and religion in Japan. His students often asked him about the miraculous healings performed by Christ and were eager to understand the source of such power. This curiosity sparked Usui’s journey across Japan, China, and India in search of the origins of this healing energy.

After years of study and spiritual exploration, Usui returned to Japan. During a period of meditation on a sacred mountain, he experienced a powerful vision and received what he later referred to as the Reiki ray. He felt the energy awaken within his body, and he understood this as the answer to his spiritual quest.

Usui dedicated the rest of his life to healing others using Reiki, establishing clinics and treating many people. His principal student, Ms Tanaka, later introduced Reiki to the United States and shared the energy with numerous students throughout her life. From there, some of her students carried Reiki across the Atlantic, eventually bringing it to the United Kingdom.

A lineage is a line of teachers and practitioners. Usui Ryhoho was the person who first received this ray of universal chi into his system. Attunement is a process whereby the receptors for the universal ray are opened in a student. Once the receptors are opened, the ray may flow through. All reiki practitioners should have a list of their lineage. This will show the teacher they received attunement from, and the teachers passing the attunements all the way back to Usui Rhyoho himself.

Reiki means ray, as in a ray or beam of life force and ki, or chi. It is the chi of the universe in motion. Reiki treatment is simple in that the universal ray of chi moves through the practitioner to the client.

During a reiki session you will feel waves of universal chi flowing through your body. This may feel like a rush of cool energy or like a wave of warmth. Some clients report tingling sensations through the areas of the body that are most in need of healing.

In a reiki treatment the client lays down on the massage table. The client remains fully clothed and a blanket is placed over the body for comfort. The practitioner grounds and centres themselves and opens the flow of reiki. The reiki moves through the practitioners hands to the client. The practitioner will place their hands over key areas such as the head, shoulders, abdomen, hips, thighs, knees and feet. At the close of the reiki session the client may lay still for a few moments to integrate. When the client sits up they may share their experience and ask any questions.
